FAQs about Tours to Machu Picchu in Peru?

Tours to Machu Picchu

How works the group tours?

The standard of our tours to Machu picchu is to be done on a “Regular” basis, which means that we share the tours with other travelers. For the comfort of our clients, we work with groups of a maximum of 10 people per guide on treks, for cultural tours 16 people per guide. For your convenience, you can contract the tours in a private service only for you and your group. Just check with our Travel specialists for that.

How far in advance do I need to book my trip?

For the Inca Trail the sooner you book the better (at least 6 months in advance). Because the access ticket to the Inca Trail is limited to 500 people per day (and during the month of February it is closed). Besides the limited number of tickets, the Inca Trail is one of the most popular in the whole world! The ticket for the Inca Trail is nominal and the purchase is only made upon payment.  So, the sooner you can organize and secure your ticket, the better.

For Cultural Tours to Machu Picchu from May to September that include WaynaPicchu Mountain it is recommended to book at least 4 months in advance, because these months are very busy and there are limited places for Machu Picchu and Wayanpicchu Mountain.

It is always better to book in advance to guarantee everything.

Which train is better, expeditions or Vistadome?

The Expedition train is the most recommended for those who are going from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes after doing the Sacred Valley of the Incas tour because the train departure time is more compatible with the end of the tour. Also, the trip takes place late at night. Therefore, there is not too much view of the journey and it is a considerably short trip.

One of the advantages of the Vistadome is that its windows are wider than those of the Expedition (and more comfortable as well). Therefore, for trips from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, the Vistadome train is recommended, because this route is usually done in the afternoon and the passenger can enjoy the landscape along the way. In addition, the journey from Aguas Calientes to Poroy takes 3.5 hours and during the trip, the Vistadome offers entertainment and on-board service included.

Is it necessary a good physical condition and acclimatization for hikes?

Due to the high altitudes, hiking in Peru requires a good acclimatization and physical condition. In other words, the traveler must be well adapted to the altitude. In addition, physical fitness is recommended for the trekking due to the variations in the route, which generally includes steep elevations in some sections, parts with steps of varying sizes, different types of ecosystems, etc. The best thing to do in Peru is to talk to your doctor first and ask for help from a serious and specialized agency to give you the necessary support.

When do I have to arrive in Cusco for my trek?

So that you do not have problems with the weather, you must arrive in the city of Cusco at least 2 days before the start of your trek. This in order to be able to adapt to the elevation, prepare for the trek.

You can also take advantage of these two days by doing some cultural tours while you adapt.

This disorder usually occurs when traveling to areas with an altitude much higher than the usual altitude of your country of origin. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and include headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and difficulty breathing.

Here are some suggestions to counteract altitude sickness:

  • Exercise a few days before leaving for your high altitude destination.
  • Upon arrival at your destination do not immediately go out to explore, take a couple of hours to rest.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, and drink plenty of water.
  • On the first day of your arrival eat as much as necessary, and avoid fats, spices and spicy foods.
  • Do not exert yourself physically the first two days upon arrival at your high altitude destination.
