Itinerary: Choquequirao Trek 5 Days

Day 1Cusco – Capuliyoc – La Playa

We are going to pick you up from your hotel at Cusco at 4 a.m, to drive in our private van for about three hours until to get the trailhead (Capuliyoc 3,200 m). There you will meet our hiking team and will have the first breakfast served by our trekking chef.

After breakfast, before to begin our hike we are going to take our first group photo with the views of the snow-peak. After that, we are going to start our expeditions by the Choquequirao trek, it is like a three-hour down hike with some breaks until the lunch stop. The trail is a little dusty and slippery, but with good trekking boots and poles, you won’t have problems. Along the way has awesome views of the Apurimac Canyon.

After lunch and rest, we are continuing for another three hours with direction to our base camp located on the bottom of the valley (la Playa 1,800 m)

Day 2La Playa – Marampata – Choquekiraw

Today we encourage wake up early for the breakfast and get ready for the day. We begin our hike crossing the hanging breach, and then it is like four hours uphill, with zigzags until the lunch place called Maranpata. Along the trail, will pass by some sugar cane farms, will see more great views of the valley, beautiful flora, fauna, and if we are lucky possibly some condors. For this section of Choquekiraw Trek, we will have an emergency horse in case you get tired and want a ride.

Once we arrive at Marampata (3,350), our lunch is ready, then we can take a nap for digestion. Finally, we are going to continue the last two-hour until Choquekirao, along the hike will have amazing views of the Apurimac canyon and also the Inca site of Choquekiraw, if we are lucky will see black bears. Once we arrive at the base camp, our team will set you up in your tents, this is located next to the Inca site. If you still have energy, you can take a 30-minute walk to enjoy the sunset from Choquekiraw Inca site.

Day 3Exploring Choquekirao

After a delicious breakfast, it begins the most spectacular excursion (Choquekiraw). To arrive there is for about 30 minutes walk, once we arrived begins the history lessons and walking tour of this impressive Inca site. Choquekiraw nowadays is considered bigger than Machu Picchu, although it’s still all hidden by the forest in the process of studies to clean up. This Inca site is extremely spread with terraces, and houses, temples, astronomical observatories, and water channels.

After a walking tour for about four hours, we will back to base camp for lunch and a rest. After lunch, you are free to back to the Inca site to explore more or go to the llama area, it’s a steep downhill 30-minute walk where you will see narrow farming terraces. There you will see llama depictions on the terrace walls from white stones. These were probably built by the Incas to represent the llama constellation in the Milky Way. After that, you can spend more time on the main complex taking more photos or enjoying the sunset over the mountains. Finally, at the recommended time you will back to our base camp to enjoy dinner and sleep like a baby.
