Choquequirao Trek - Choquequirao Peru Details

Experience the best of the lesser-known lost city of the Incas with our English-speaking local tour guide on this exclusive five-day Choquequirao Trek. Choquequirao Peru is recognized as the sister city of Machu Picchu.

The name Choquequirao in Quechua means “Cradle of Gold”. The archeological complex is built high up the Quriwayrahina Mountain Range.

Both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu were built in the same era by the renowned Inca Emperor Pachacutec. Choquequirao’s archaeological complex is spread over six square kilometers.

When the Spanish invaded the former Inca capital, they could not conquer Choquequirao because of its remote location. The Incas left it abandoned and took asylum in Vilcabamba. The whole complex was covered in lush vegetation. Just a third of the complex is excavated and is open for tourism.

Choquequirao Tours are popular among travelers wanting to explore the lesser-known yet prominent Inca ruin. The trek takes you off the touristic track, through Apurimac Canyon offering stunning views of the Canyons of Apurimac.

The region is home to native flora and fauna. Often you will get to see the flight of Andean condors during the hike.

The trail involves plenty of uphill and downhill hikes. You will be experiencing different climatic conditions as the altitude changes. Due to its remote location, Choquequirao receives just a handful of visitors a day.

To enhance tourism, authorities are planning on installing a cable car. This will rapidly increase the number of visitors who wants to visit this Inca Masterpiece on a full-day tour from the city of Cusco.

Why Do Adventures Peru?

Do Adventures Peru is a renowned Choquequirao Peru Tour operator. We have dedicated English-speaking local guides who are tourism professionals and are born and raised in the region. Our guides have extensive knowledge of Inca history and Andean culture.

Please note that Choquequirao Trek is a high-altitude experience. You will be passing through many high mountain passes. We highly recommend that you spend at least four to five days in Cusco to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness.

Although the hike to Choquequirao could be somewhat challenging, it offers a rewarding experience. It is one of the prettiest treks in South America.
