Itinerary at a Glance.

This was one of the first alternative routes to Machu Picchu after the Inca Trail, it offers us the most picturesque attractions on the Salkantay route to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, during the journey we will visit the Humantay Lagoon, we will see the snowy Humantay, Salkantay, among others.

We will also visit the famous mirador of Llactapata, by booking this option you will be traveling by the most important places of the Salkantay Trek, if you prefer to overnight in Llactapata with and incredible views look the Ultimate Salkantay Trek 5 Days.

Itinerary: Salkantay Trek 4 Days

Day 1Visit Killarumiyuc the moon temple & Humantay

We will pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 am to travel in the direction of Mollepata where we will have our optional breakfast at a local restaurant (not included), here we will purchase our entrance ticket to the Salkantay trail (Included) and then continue our journey towards Soraypampa where our hike begins.

From here we will walk about 1 hour hike uphill to the Humantay Lagoon at 4230m / 13,878ft. Once here our guide will explain the reason for the turquoise colors and you will have free time to explore and take pictures.

We will then return to Soraypampa at 3930m / 12,849ft for lunch, after we will continue for two hours to Salkantaypampa where is located our basecamp.

Here we will have our tea time accompanied with an amazing view of the peaks, followed by dinner before heading to sleep in our tents.

Day 2Crossing the Salkantay Pass & descend to the Cloud forest

Today is the most difficult day of the entire route, 14 km, our staff will wake you up with a cup of coca tea in your tents, at 5am will be our breakfast and then begin our hike up to the Salkantay pass at 4630 m above sea level. This first stretch will take us 3 hours to reach the pass.

Once at the highest point our guide will explain the importance of the mountains for the Andean communities, and we will have free time to celebrate our conquest with a small Andean ritual based on coca leaves. Then we will start our way down for about 2 hours to WayraqPunku for lunch.

After lunch we continue our trek downhill for about 3 hours more to the village of Chaullay at 2900 m, from where we will board a local car to Llucmabamba our basecamp at 2000m, followed by our tea time, dinner, In this place you can take a hot bath for 10 soles.

Day 3Coffee farms, Llactapata & Aguas Calientes

Today we will wake up at 5:00 am again with a cup of hot tea, followed by our delicious breakfast. Around 6:00am, our hike begins, with a visit the local coffee plantation, where we will be instructed on the varieties of coffee that grown in this town.

Continues our hike uphill for 3 hours until we reach Llactapata from where we will have the first views of Machu Picchu in the distance and also our guide will explain the importance of the archaeological center of Llactapata.

After we will descend for about 2 hours to the village located next to the hydroelectric plant, here we will have our lunch. Finally, our hike continues for about 3 hours more along the train tracks towards the town of Aguas Calientes, where we will settle in a hotel in shared rooms followed by dinner at a local restaurant.

Note: today if you prefer we can continue from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes by train for USD $ 30.

Day 4Visit Machu Picchu & Back to Cusco

The big day has arrived, we will visit the archaeological park of Machu Picchu built by the Incas, you will wake up at 4:00 am so you can have breakfast at your hotel and then go by bus (included) for about 30 minutes to the park of Machu Picchu.

We will enter Machu Picchu to start the guided tour for about two hours to Machu Picchu, our guide will give you history lessons, will give you to know the functions of each place visited in the archaeological park, we will visit the most important places of Machu Picchu always following the new regulations of the Government.

After the guided tour, if you book an extra ticket for the Huayna Picchu mountain, you will start your additional hike. At the recommended time you will return to the town of Aguas Calientes by bus (included) for lunch at a local restaurant (not included).

Then you will have free time to explore the town of Aguas Calientes before departing by train to the town of Ollantaytambo. The train  leaves at 15:20, this trip lasts one hour and thirty by the Vilcanota river valley to Ollantaytambo.

  • All Private TransportationTransportation from Cusco to Soraypampa on day 1, From Chaullay to Llucmabamba on day 2, Consettur Bus round trip on day 4 and from Ollantaytambo to Cusco on day 4.

  • Trekking Equipment.During the trek we will transport 7 kg of your belongings for that will provide you a duffle bag, a rain poncho, plus a backpack cover.
  • Campin EquipmentWe use the best possible equipment for mountain activities for your comfort and safety. Tents of 4 people capacity but we use only for 2 people, as well as spacious dining tents.
  • Tour support team.We include staff that will make your trip unforgettable, such as the guide, cook, cook's assistant, porters and muleteers.

What is not included?

  • Single Room or single Tentif you require a single room or tent has an extra cost.
  • Gratuities for the team.Tipping is a common tradition on any kind of tour, the travelers tips to hand out to the muleteers, chefs and guides. Although we pay a good salary to all our team, always an extra is welcome for them.
  • Meals not mentioned.First Breakfast, last lunch and dinner are not included.
  • Trekking poles.Walking sticks with rubber tips are highly recommended to make easy your hike.
  • Sleeping BagIs necessary to bring a -15°C sleeping bag, for your confort.
  • Travel insurance: It is not mandatory, but it is recommended to protect yourself financially from any lost excursions.

Pricing & Departure Dates

The tour can leave on any day of the week, from March to January. we dont leave on february because rain a lot.

The departured are 100% guaranted, because we operate since two travelers.

Price

Private Tour: 

Private tours are available and priced according party size.

Group Tour:

  • $ 5600.00  US$ 500 per person.

A group tour means, that it is open for other travelers to join. This means, your group will have different fitness abilities.

Discount:

Travelers under 17 will have a $40 discount. Groups of 6 or more will have a $40 discount each. Please advise us when you are going to book to give you the discount.

Required Deposit:  To book, you need to make a pre payment of US$ 150.00 per person by PayPal.

Please after deposit send us the transfer number. Only with this we will be able to confirm your pre payment and reservation of the trek.

Balance: The remaining balance can be paid online by Paypal in advance, or in Cusco at briefing with cash (recommend) .

Notice: If your are going to pay the balance with credit or debit car is a charges 5%, that have to be covered by the clients, or can be pay in Cusco with cash without tax before the tour.

  • Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain: $75 USD each (Please request when you book the tour)

Huayna Picchu mountain:  This is the famous mountain behind the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. it takes 50 minutes up, and another 40 to back, you can climb this mountain once finished the guided tour of Machu Picchu. The entry to this mountain has an extra cost, and need to be book in advance.

Machu Picchu Mountain: This is the other mountain who surrounds the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, it is less popular than Huayna Picchu and takes 1.5 hour up.  Also requires an extra entry that cost .
